Room Of The Week :: Pared Down European Style In A Living & Dining Space

As my hunt for the perfect pieces for our dining room continues, I've been turning my thoughts to lighting, and one classic beauty is the vertigo pendant featured in today's space. It's a style that comes up time and time again in many of my favorite European homes, and this home is no exception! While I'm not sure it will work in our own home, every time I see it I want one (pssst, they come in many finishes!).

But back to this home: what I love about these two rooms, designed by Estudio Maria Santos in Madrid,ย  is the way the way the spaces play off of each other! This is another important factor in our own living and dining room, so I'm taking some cues from this pared down European style as I attempt to bring a little of that look into my home.

The dining room is an incredible mix of some serious favorites! First off: I love the antique screen mounted on the wall as art. A great reminder to always re-think pieces that you love and how to use them!

But let's look at all the elements here: we've got antique, global, and modern all mingling together and working incredibly well. I like that it feels full, but not excessive. The way the quiet patterns in the art play of of the bold stripes is fantastic. And while there are a lot of lines here (lines in the rug, chairs, and pendant), for me the repeat of this pattern keeps the eye moving while not feeling dizzying.

On the opposite side of the dining room, genius little built-in shelving for tabletop decor makes for lovely storage and frames the view back into the living room.

A room like this makes me feel like large open spaces are overrated. How lovely to have a cozy living room with two sofas perfect for lounging on by the fireplace, or packing with guests in a perfectly conversational setting. The extra space for the antique chaise helps bring some breathing room.

Again, you'll notice the lovely mix of classic with modern here. The side tables both adding sculptural elements, the art a bold hit of color, and the floor lamp being a statement piece on its own!

I truly don't think that I'd change a thing! I love the layout, all the elements, the scale, and the palette.
