Ever since moving in with my boyfriend in February, I've been d-y-i-n-g to give the breakfast nook a makeover. The first thing to go was the paint. And then I got a little inspiration from my friends over at Palm Breeze to give things a tropical twist...
To some, tropical might mean more color and saturation. To me, it means the opposite - white white white! White is the perfect backdrop FOR color. Plus with those tiles in the nook (not ideal) I wanted something that felt super fresh. Instead of fighting them, I decided to work with them, and this was the result...
As always, a little paint goes a long way in a room transformation! I used 'chantilly lace' white by Benjamin Moore and then decided to trim the inside of the window sills in a dark dark charcoal that we had laying around the house. I also sprayed out the window frame in black to give it that iron look - sneaky huh? I love the effect!
Believe it or not, I did all of this on a major shoestring budget. I already had the tulip table, dining chairs and settee, which had been residing in the basement. Then I went hunting for accessories!
To get a tropical vibe, one must start with a big HUGE plant! I was lucky enough to score this leafy beauty at Ikea, but needed the perfect pedistal to put it on. I found this copper one at Target and immediately fell in love. It's sturdy enough to hold the plant or a person if I ever wanted to use it as a stool.
The rug was also a lucky find at Home Goods - I love the multiple patterns going on. At first glance I thought it might be too busy but when I got it in the space, I realized it was perfect.
On the other end of the nook, my old sideboard got a little refresh with a new lamp, small accent rug, mirror and other accessories. This is the area that I really wanted to spice up with color, and I did! I love the mostly blue palette with that hit of yellow. Super fresh and - of course - tropical inspired.
After that, I threw on some pillows (available here and here), the table was set, and we were ready to welcome guests! And what better way to break in a breakfast nook than inviting your girlfriends over for a little breakfast!?
Since we had a tropical theme going on, I had to offer up a tropical menu. I topped challah french toast with fresh pineapple and coconut for an easy twist to this brunch classic, which paired perfectly with the Pineapple Mandarin Orange Palm Breeze.
YUM. Even the plates and chargers added an exotic flair to to the table!
I can't even tell you how happy I am to have a serving bar in the house now! It's a great spot to set up a little area for cocktails.
The champagne bar was a big hit, and we topped off that Ruby Red Citrus Palm Breeze with champagne and a splash of Grapefruit Juice for a refreshing mimosa! While we aren't quite ready for a full “housewarming” party, this little get together was the perfect way to toast our new, fresh space.
