Kitchen & Bath Trend :: Black Hardware & Fixtures
Moving in with someone always has it's bumps - and, my friends, I've just discovered our first one. My man's aversion to brass. *gasp*.
Now, I'll admit that he has a pretty open mind when it comes to designing and updating the house, and he's starting to come around to the idea of my favorite finish used in a few select places, but because of this conflict of design interest, I've actually be pushing myself to open my own eyes to what else is out there and I've suddenly found myself drawn to matte black hardware and fixtures for the kitchen and bath...
First - some context. This is not our kitchen (I wish) but the coloring in ours is similar. White cabinets with dark the dark oil-rubbed bronze knobs. This comes off a bit like modern farmhouse, which I'm ok with. But it also go me thinking... maybe this contrast of creamy white and black isn't so bad...
The challenge, of course, is that the matte black faucets I've been looking at are way better off in a more modern setting. However - do you spy the cabinet pulls in this kitchen? Totally traditional. So there may be hope after all.
Here, the faucet mixes with classic elements like white subway tile and a more rustic wood finish done in modern black. The key to this stark contrast is - of course - to add warm elements like wood and wovens.
Which makes this kitchen my favorite inspiration thus far...
Just one problem for us - we don't have wood cabinets, so we might have to achieve this look with warmer paint - maybe just on the bottom cabinets and island...
I'm also considering a similar option for the bath!
Again - the fixtures happen to look stunning in a modern setting with marble...
And are better with a touch of wood (this also looks like a much more affordable version of a remodel).
And this might be my favorite because it livens things up a bit with that great tile and rug.
What do you think? Could you replace your love of brass with black? I'm still trying to talk him into this brass kitchen faucet fixture which I already have in our office, but in the meantime, some sources for black fixture inspiration...
1. kohler purist // 2. delta trinsic // 3. dornbracht tara wall mount // 4. brizo solna // 5. dornbracht tara // 6. delta trinsic single handle // 7. kohler purist wall mount
I'm actually really dying for that last faucet - the kohler wall mount in black - for the kitchen in the basement which I'm hoping to turn into my own little wet bar / shooting area in the house! (That's a whole other project!) Of course, I've managed to pick the most expensive one...
If you're more of a high-shine kind of decorator, Ikea surprisingly has this one in stock.

I couldn’t agree more! I recently toured a newly renovated home and the first thing that caught my eye in the kitchen was the matte black faucet. Intriguing, unique and glorious!
I love all the matte black fixtures. A beautiful way to make a white & rustic room look chic. Great inspirational post.

I am with your husband. I think matte black will date better than brass.
These matte black fixtures are hot and so is matte brass. As a designer I have found that brass is a hard sell to most dudes, including my man. We compromised with brass allowed upstairs and oil rubbed bronze or black downstairs. Good luck -Divide and conquer!
great advice – I have a feeling we’ll be able to work them both in… if I twist his arm hard enough 😉 i like the upstairs/downstairs division!
Wow! I love this! Super chic! Thanks for sharing!
I always thought black and white in combo looked very timeless and elegant – and you can definitely play up the look and feel with more modern fixtures and sleeker finishes. I absolutely love that kitchen – those windows!!!
Have you ever thought about creating an ebook or guest authoring
on other blogs? I have a blog based upon on the
same information you discuss and would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my readers
would appreciate your work. If you are even remotely interested, feel free to shoot
me an e mail.
Although I hate to admit it. Sometimes its the collaboration between my husband and I that ends up with the best result. If I had it all my way we would have a peach bedroom instead it is a dark blue grey that looks amazing with my black and white obsession. It is hard for a head strong interior design girl like me to give someone else an opinion, but it’s worth it to have a space we both love. Best wishes to you on this big project!
There WILL BE challenges….fortunately, this time, the matte black is cool (I’m a tarnished brass kinda gal so that didn’t come easily.) franki
Love love love this look! thanks for sharing
You should look into Newport Brass. Their Matte Black finish can applied to all their faucets! Beautiful options and made in California too!
I was looking at hardware recently for a project and I didn’t even consider going with matte black, but this post has convinced me that its great looking and can go both modern and traditional!
I would present him with divorce papers right away.. kidding! I love brass, however I admit the matte black looks amazing. If it starts looking a bit dull, how about covering the floor with patterned tiles in your favourite green? That way you’ll get close to the style that goes with brass and away from the farmhouse… 😀
this is awesome 🙂 look stunning and all the matte black fixtures!

I never really considered matte black finishing, but it looks absolutely beautiful!
Don’t know why I didn’t comment before, but the marble bathroom in your post is mine, and I have to say we haven’t regretted our black fixtures one second. We’ve had them for about a year now and they are a dream, it is my favorite room in the house. 🙂
It does look great with some wood, we’ve opted for hardwood flooring and it works really well!
Ohhh, I love that you went with hardwood flooring! Thanks for leaving the comment – the bathroom is just stunning, seriously!!!
