Erin is in Mexico, and I’m working on some other projects this weekend, so no updates to our Apartment #34 blog today…

… but, there’s always time for a little weekend inspiration. Lovin’ on these stripes and the pattern in the rug all put together.

This week’s room is one of my favorites… it’s been around for a while, as it was featured in THAT issue of Domino mag with the “For Like Ever” poster on the cover. (Does anyone else feel like that was a day in Domino history?)
Anyhow – Suzanne over at Simply Magic featured this room on her blog this week, reminding me of how much this space perfectly appeals to my aesthetic…
Open, sophisticated (but a little girly at the same time), and not overly cluttered ~ only the essential accessories are needed for this room. It reminds me of a modern take on a sitting room – perfect for the Marie Antoinettes of today. If this were my room, I would lounge in the sunshine, absorbing some warmth and catching up on reading… and I would probably add some barely there modern touches. Like an acrylic table over that zebra rug. Or maybe not. Maybe it’s just perfect the way it is?

definitely agree about the modern touches. and the OCD in me is screaming to rearrange the room a bit so that it’s not so heavy around the fireplace.
but yes, i have this saved as one of my favorites too!
what an elegant yet comfortable room. the couch is exquisite and those floors….wow….what a room, indeed.
maybe the world marie antoinette of today is too much !! but i like it tough
oh, i could while away weeks in this room. so perfect. as always.
the OCD in me is screaming to rearrange the room a bit so that it’s not so heavy around the fireplace.
I have to say “ditto” to this comment. Even so, I love the vibe and style of the room.
i think we all have a little OCD in us to create a better balance in the room – it is very heavy by the fireplace, but who knows what the other side looks like…? i’ll agree with both of you on that one!
this is gorgeous….love the chaise…
cool, just saw this! it’s erin fetherston’s home btw. i can’t even remember where i found it… but she’s got great style.. & she’s a fab clothing designer. how can you go wrong in a room with that architecture, seriously.
thanks for the shout out!
I’ve always loved this room. And you are right. A great lucite table next to the day bed would be wonderful. After all, I would need somewhere to place my beverage of choice as I curl up on that oh-so-comfy daybed reading a good book (or magazine!).
Still one of my fav. rooms–think it just may be that sophisticated and girly combination . . .
Hello! Thanks for your comment on our blog about the Oly daybed, and holy cow…that pink day bed in your post is to DIE for! sigh.
Also, I do agree that the “For Like Ever” cover from Domino was a moment they have yet to repeat (sadly), I ordered that poster and have it hanging in my office right now. Love it! I’m adding you to our blog list, thanks for checking in with us! Kelie
I think I have to agree- that is pretty much my DREAM room.
Ahhh…
It seems like another trend to add to the list these days is decorating with saturated colors. A year ago, if you asked me to decorate your apartment in primary colors (red, yellow and blue), I probably would have looked at you like you were crazy and thrown my hands up in exasperation. (What is this, a Crayola Crayon box?) But, these spaces have made me change my mind…
Ivanka Trump’s apartment – a fairly neutral use of the primary colors.

Gorgeous styling from Jonny Valiant
Both rooms via Habitually Chic
Now, I’m not saying that this is my style (it’s SO not), but these rooms are all amazing examples of how to use primary colors the right way… not an easy thing to do!
If it were me, however, my use of color would look a bit more like this…
This room (featured in Domino a few months back) keeps the space open with a simple white canvas that uses pops of the red, blue and yellow as fun yet sophisticated accent colors. This space is anything but elementary, darling.
What are your thoughts on primary colors in design? Tricky right??

Good Lawwwd, I can’t even get neutrals right, much less primary colors! LOL.
The dark blue wall in the 3rd to last picture, with the red sofa . . . Yes!
tricky, but they can be done beautifully…love that last room especially.
great postxo
I love the first image. Really clean but bold too.
This post (especially the 2nd and 3rd pics) gives me some inspiration for what to do with the saturated blue walls in my bedroom. OK, now all I need to do is get off my ass and do something about it!
Btw, thanks for adding me to your blog roll.
Dear Cassandra – love your new photo for your profile and love the odd red chair in this shot
all things bright…
thanks so much for the sweet comment on my profile pic! and i too love the use of the random red chair at this table…. such an unexpected pop!
love, love, love the blues.
When last month’s Domino mag came out featuring tons of resources for an eco friendly lifestyle, I devoured every last page of that issue bookmarking new resources to feature on coco+kelley and as future reference for myself. This one might be my favorite.
The freestanding fireplace by EcoSmart Fire is totally genius. Because it doesn’t require installation, utility connection or flue, it can fit into any space you want – apartments, homes, restaurants, bars – wherever you’re decorating. AND, it’s fueled by a renewable modern energy (Denatured Ethanol), so it burns clean and is virtually maintenance free.
They have some crazy designs, like this “Fire & Ice” coffee table that seems, well, a little dangerous… but cool!
Overall, the clean lines of their designs make them appropriate for any modern home.
And the surrounds are completely customizable in different colors, depending on the style you choose to go with.
As a girl who will not be owning her own home in LA for quite some time, I love the idea of a fireplace that will move with me and make any space I inhabit a little more cozy.

That’s a great idea! We’re nearing winter here in Sydney and I would love to have one of these instead of a rickety heater.
I am dying to use one of the EcoSmart’s in a project but they’re just so darn expensive!! Great post though!
~Kate
Uh, YEAH, they are expensive. If you end up using them, Kate, I want to hear how they work and look in person!!
And Jelenie, I agree, these are so much better than clunky radiators or even dirty fireplaces (although, really, who doesn’t love a real authentic fireplace?)
When I was at an age when any normal little girl should have completely lost interest in a movie as long as “Gone With The Wind,” I remember sitting on the couch in the living room, home sick from school, watching the ENTIRE THING. I was captivated.
I wanted to be Scarlett O’Hara in all her sassy, pouty, ridiculous, tantrum throwing, adulteress, fashionable glory. (Which really explains a lot about me, actually…) But more importantly, I loved that scene where she determinately tore down those curtains and crafted them into a lavish green velvet gown that (if I recall correctly) somehow managed to save Tara.
Think about it. This could be the original ‘Rooms from the Runway’ moment! Except in reverse of course…
So what’s my point?
Well, friends, I’m starting a list of ‘must see’ movies that have nothing to do with plot (although that certainly helps) and everything to do with visual inspiration. They can be classics or fresh out in the theater, but I’m interested in knowing… what movies have inspired you? Marie Antoinette would certainly top my list. A more random selection would be Meet Joe Black… the whole movie had a certain Gatsby-esque quality to it that I just can’t resist. So, help a sassy, pouty, ridiculous, tantrum throwing, adulteress, fashionable girl out. What’s on your list?

I recently watched the Darjeeling Limited and was visually blown away. The actual plot did nothing for me, but all those colors! And the set design. Amazing.
Lately I’ve been inspired by the remake of Great Expectations (with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke). Something bohemian, tragic and beautiful about that old Florida mansion. Love it.
“Under the Tuscan Sun”
“The American President”
…and…
…don’t laugh…
“You’ve Got Mail”
For reasons beyond explanation, I love the set design of “You’ve Got Mail”. I think it has something to do with the contrast of Kathleen Kelly’s cottage home and Joe Fox’s penthouse. You should check out Surroundings blog…she has a feature called “Get this look”.
In terms of visual inspiration, I love:
Ever After
Big Fish and anything else by Tim Burton
Marie Antoinette (obvs)
Pleasantville
and don’t laugh, but lake bell’s apartment in that horrible eva longoria wedding movie was totally stunning and very anthropologie styles!
girl, i am so scarlett too! we are two peas in a pod. aren’t you in LA? we should really do coffee sometime.
inside the loop had a good theme going. wes anderson’s style is ridiculous. i have to mention royal tennenbaums & the life aquatic. my home was inspired by both. i also love amelie! so vivid, parisian, chic!
the english patient, gosford park!!!!
HA! I am LOVING all these different recommendations! coincidentally i’ve already got the Darjeeling Limited and Great Expectations on my netflix!
and mara, i would have to agree that the simple sets of You’ve Got Mail were VERY well done! they looked so perfect for the characters and actually lived in.
suzanne, i have a feeling you and i are on the same page – we should definitely grab coffee sometime! i love your suggestions, and i may have to revisit some of those movies!
All the Wes Anderson films where he manages to get the same color scheme into EVERY SINGLE frame. The Life Aquatic, Royal Tenenbaums, and Darjeeling Limited were my favs.
love this post! Under the Tuscan Sun did it for me, quite unexpectedly. I walked out of the movie and something kicked in, I knew at that exact moment I was going to take the leap and start my company. It not exactly a beautiful Italian Villa but it is just as rewarding! thanks for making me stop and remember that moment
aw, julieann, thanks for sharing!! i’m glad my post made you recall that moment. and i really did love that movie more than i ever thought i would
i couldn’t even finish the book… but maybe that’s because i was IN tuscany when i was reading it… it was much more fun to live it than read about it!
I’m lovin this post!
True Confessions: I, too, LOVE the styling in {and the movie } You’ve Got Mail. It’s one of my all time favorites.
Here are some others that stand out:
Something’s Gotta Give (Diane Keaton’s house)
A Good Year…a vineyard in Provence…ooh la la
Atonement-Gorgeous
And of Course…Breakfast at Tiffany’s
goodness!!! how could i forget Something’s Gotta Give! I LOVED Diane Keaton’s house – so very perfectly Hamptons in gorgeous clean shades of grey. Thanks for the reminder s.hoptalk!
High Society with Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Everything about it is beautiful and the Louis Armstrong is great.
Thrill of a Romance with Esther Williams at a Very Dorothy Draper hotel(1946)
The town house in How to Muurder your wife(1966)the art alone makes it a must see
The London flat in Reluctant DEbutant(1950′s) loads of killer toile in the entryway
Gone With The Wind is my all time favorite movie… ever. I finally forced my hubby to watch it with me. After one of my favorite lines, “I can’t think about that now. I’ll think about it tomorrow” He laughed and said “Now I see why you love this movie!” SO my new favorite flick is GWTW’s equivalent. The Other Boleyn Girl was amazing and scandalous and I loved it!
Atonement was a visual genius. Stardust was a lesser known film but absolutely beautiful. Big Fish. So many. What a great post idea.
I had a nasty little cold hit me this weekend, preventing me from checking off my huge list of to do’s, but giving me a very good excuse to stay home and sleep in late… so today I’m calling in sick with the promise of a new post tomorrow!
Thanks to everyone who commented on my new banner. I love it! And, if you need something to do keep you busy today, I have updated my blogroll with some new talent, and Erin has a new post over at Apartment #34.

All Things Bright and Beautiful’s post on a series of amazing fashion photographs from Melvin Sokolsky.
A gorgeous flurry of (more!) butterflies as recycled art posted at Happy Mundane.
And Seattle’s answer to The Sartorialist, Pike/Pine (a reference to the area connecting downtown Seattle to Capitol Hill known as the Pike/Pine corridor). Not an easy feat considering that Seattle is not exactly known for its style… but it’s getting there!

Love the new banner. It looks great!
I really like the Apt. #34 blog..great idea. Your new banner looks great too.
Thanks C.E. – since I’m making Cassie be my long distance interior designer we figured why not invite others to join in the fun! I hope you come back often – I need all the help I can get!

oooh, all that sunlight is incredible. love what you’ve done with the multicolored curtain layers. provides privacy yet still maintains anopen feel. wonderfully clever. i am again, most inspired as i have similar windows in my living room.
LOVE the new banner! It’s just perfect!

Hey Cass!
LOVE this room! It’s totally what I want to do in the house. A little funky but pretty basic. Do you know what those wall colors are by chance? Fabulous! And love the window!!
Kel ~ I have no idea what the paint color is, but I’ll find some that are similar and send ‘em to you!
Can’t wait to see the new house ~ a visit is very due!
Hi Cassandra!
Great room!! I love the color combinations and the yellow rug (which by the way, we are doing the same rug for a client of ours but we’ve been told it doesn’t come in yellow!!). Can you tell me where this photo is from Please!!
Thanks,
Jen
I love those graphic shades with that rug!
