Mini Home Updates :: Our Master Bedroom Makeover!

You may remember back in January me saying that this is the year of mini projects. After our full kitchen remodel two years ago, and our wedding last year, this year I swore I'd only take smaller projects. And, they would certainly not involve throwing the party of the year or tearing down any walls!

I've been working on two spaces in our home, that I'm excited to finally share more of with you in the coming weeks. Starting today with our Master Bedroom!

We decided we need a total reset of our foundational pieces, and were so happy to partner with AllModern to do so!

Now in order to do this current update some justice, you have to see the before. The configuration of this room is tricky because nothing is centered except the window that you see above. The other windows are offset, the closet door is right next to the bedroom door, and the only solid wall leaves you with the bed in this awkward configuration...

This was the last remaining room left basically untouched since I moved in with my husband - then boyfriend - three years ago. I seriously cannot believe it's been three years. Obviously, there were other priorities in the house before I tackled this space, which is kind of ridiculous! It's so small that the options in here were pretty restricted, making decisions time-consuming but surprisingly easy.

Here were my priorities when selecting new items:

  1. The current bed was high and heavy, and I wanted something lighter and lower to create a greater sense of space in the small room.
  2. I really wanted the dresser to float above the floor, rather than sitting right on the floor. Again - a visual trick for opening up the room.
  3. A fresh coat of paint and a new layout that would help bring better flow to the space.

And here's what we ended up with!

The first thing I did was to reorient the room, and I knew I wanted to try putting the bed in front of this window. Luckily, AllModern had the perfect options for this! Low to the floor to make the room feel larger, and in a beautiful neutral linen fabric, this bed frame was the clear winner for me. I got it in 'linen talc' which is a perfect oatmeal, and features my favorite detail in upholstery - a french seam.

Now, instead of opening the door into the side of this huge bed, there's much more room to walk into the space, and we still get plenty of light from the window.

The second big change to the room was the dresser! I immediately fell in love with this piece for its lighter wood finish and - just like I'd wanted - slim legs that keep it up off the floor. This tricks the eye into the piece feeling visually lighter and more minimal, even though dimensionally this dresser is only very slightly smaller than the one we had before.

You may remember that we also had a mirror above the old dresser, which I liked having. I still wanted a mirror here to use for putting on makeup but also opening the space up a bit. I loved the minimal style of this round mirror that still allowed plenty of room for artwork, and possibly some more shelving to the right of it! It was nice to add a different shape to the room.

It's crazy how with replacing just a few items in the room, it has a completely different feel! I still have a few items on my list to update the space, like swapping out the makeshift lighting on the nightstands with sconces to allow for more room. I actually love these nightstands (we've had them forever and they're now discontinued) but I'm also wondering if I should look for some slightly larger ones to fill the space?

I'm also slightly on the fence about window treatments. I'm thinking fabric roman shades would be nice to replace our honeycomb ones, but I also like the way a little drapery looks behind the bed. Care to weigh in on that one?

The new configuration and lighter pieces in here even encouraged me to pull out some of my favorite bedding pieces and start to play with layering things up a bit more!

Gracie loooooves the new set up too because now the bed is low enough to easily hop into. Spoiled little pup that she is! The new duvet and my favorite rug from Serena & Lily also helped refresh things a bit.

With such a small space, I've had to get sneaky with storage, like a basket for magazines under the bed, and a little coat rack for items like my bathrobe and a bag that I keep my dry cleaning in.

What do you think of the refreshes so far? I'm excited for some more finishing touches in here, but I'm curious to hear what you think might be missing!? Lighting is next on my list! Here are a few sources for what we've done so far...
