Mini Makeover :: Black Is Back In The Kitchen!

This fall we’ve been doing a series of mini makeovers, and believe it or not we’ve got ONE more to bring you before the holidays really hit. My sister’s kitchen! Yes, we might be crazy, but when Whirlpool Brand came to me with the opportunity to place some of their sleek new black stainless steel appliances into a kitchen remodel… well, that’s a pretty hard offer to resist, right?

My sister and her boyfriend live in his townhouse and they’ve been dying to do some updates to their own kitchen, and I thought these appliances would be perfect for them. Not only do they have a rich, matte look, they are also fingerprint-resistant! Plus, I’ll fully admit that I’m obsessed with this trend of black being back in kitchen design…

What I love about black and dark grey in the kitchen is how dramatic it is, and how it helps make everything else around it pop. And adding black appliances to the mix gives things a seriously seamless look!

Let’s take a look at what we’re working with in her actual space…

As you can see – the kitchen is a pretty standard builder style space. Granite counters, nickel hardware, and the kind of backsplash I’d love to rip out. Now, because they actually just started on a bathroom renovation (like, gutted their master bathroom), adding a full kitchen renovation to the mix was out of the question. So we’re doing some minor updates that we can squeeze in before the holidays that will make a big impact before they start entertaining guests!

The kitchen is somewhat small and visually it feels a bit cluttered. Our plan is to bring in those dark appliances to blend more with the existing dark brown cabinetry. Eventually, they will get the cabinets painted a deep dark charcoal and possibly do the uppers all in white. I’m trying to convince them to let me paint the island for this first update! (Stay tuned on that one – ha!)

We’re replacing the backsplash with an off-white subway tile that will work well with the granite countertops, which are staying put – for now. Again, eventually they will probably replace the countertops with something like quartz or soapstone. I’m hoping for a butcher block island too!

Over the bar, we’re hoping to swap out two canned lights for pendants and some more streamlined stools. When it’s all said and done, this should be a gorgeous, classic black & white kitchen! Here’s some inspiration to get you visualizing…

Ok, so here’s the plan for what I’m calling ‘phase one’ of the remodel… the mini makeover!

1. nickel pendant | 2. whirpool black stainless steel dishwasher | 3. whirlpool black stainless steel counter-depth refrigerator | 4. black faucet | 5. industrial stools | 6. whirlpool black stainless steel microwave | 7. cream subway tile | 8. grey runner | 9. whirlpool black stainless steel electric range

Every single appliance is going to be swapped out for the gorgeous and sleek Whirlpool Fingerprint-Resistant Black Stainless Steel line. Even keeping the cabinets as they are – in that rich chocolate brown – these appliances are going to make a world of difference. An updated look on a very classic tone, with polished nickel and black.

Stay tuned for our progress as we go!! I’m hoping to have it all done by the end of November, just in time for holiday parties at her place! Until then, you can take a look at Whirlpool’s fingerprint-resistant black stainless steel appliances here.
