Guest Room Updates Part Two :: Sophisticated Neutrals

Yesterday we brought you a budget makeover from Sara's guest room that showed how, with a little hunting at our favorite affordable sources, we were able to quickly give her old room a fresh look.

Well, today, we're turning that room upside down and giving it a total redesign that is meant to last for the ages. When we design for clients, this is almost always the goal. To create a space that is a foundation for them to build on for years to come. Which means one thing in my book: sophisticated neutrals!

For this makeover we teamed up with ATG Stores again to make some holiday dreams come true - at least for Sara's guests and family! For a quick look at all the sources, you can head right here. Every single piece in this room came from them. We started - of course - with the bed frame...

Upgrading from a DIY headboard to a full frame bed was a huge improvement. It feels more substantial and sturdy! The shape of this bed gives it a very European feel, which I love - it adds a bit more sophistication to to the space.

To balance that 'old world' feel, we went with smaller, modern side tables in a gorgeous grey marble. Their scale offers a little breathing room on either side of the bed, and their finish makes them less fussy than wood (no need for coasters!).

On the tables, a few items to help guests feel comfortable and taken care of. Fresh plants go a long way in bringing life to a room and I love having a water carafe by the bed. As a guest I always feel a little awkward sneaking into the kitchen at night!

You can see we used these light, mirrored trays to corral items on the side table. A stylist trick that makes things feel a little more organized! And can we talk about those brass sconces? They might be my favorite additions to the room. Sconces are definitely having a moment, but my favorite spot to use them in the house is definitely this one. Getting the lighting on the wall and off the table leaves more surface area for books, candles, plants, whatever!

Just like the previous bed, we went big with layering the linens, and boy are these some delicious linens! Coyuchi is one of my favorite brands and ATG Stores happens to carry their lovely organic line. Rather than mix a lot of pattern, we went really tonal with our selection of sheets and a nice heavy wool blanket. While I think we're all used to piling pillows on beds, I don't mind having a less is more mentality in the bedroom. Less pillows on the floor come bedtime!

Oh, and we swapped out the smaller jute rug for a larger one that tucks all the way under the bed and feels more substantial.

The final touch? A fresh floral arrangement is always a nice way to welcome your friends or family into their temporary lodgings. What do you think of this space? Do you like the first makeover or this one better? I love that this room feels really 'grown up' but also gives Sara the flexibility to add color or pattern the way she would like.
