Stella Jean :: Wax + Stripes

Whenever I’ve traveled in the past, I’ve brought back textiles from my adventures abroad. When I was in Africa, however, I managed to get so flustered at the local markets by all the offerings, that I somehow came back without a single scrap of fabric. A major regret, and a perfect excuse to go return!

So, when I was putting together my South African-inspired table a few weeks ago, I was sad that I was unable to incorporate some authentic prints and patterns from my travels, as one of the major inspirations for the table was the style of designer Stella Jean

Stella Jean is known for what she calls her ‘wax + stripes’ philosophy. A melding of cultures that honors her Italo-Haitian heritage, and served as such inspiration for me. As worded in the explanation of her most recent SS13 collection, “The matching of oxymorons highlight a strong stylistic consistency and make for a harmonious, multicoloured and joyous marriage.”

It’s not just the mix of patterns and cultures, but the dramatic cuts and shapes that make her collection so exquisite as well. Not to mention inspiring enough for one of my style icons, Viviana Volpicella, to adopt and interpret the look herself…

I think this mix of history and culture coming together in such beautiful collections is one future of fashion. I hope to see much more of it.
