While we’re on the subject of love, I thought I’d take a moment to talk about my heart. Yours too. In fact, all of ours.
Did you know that February is American Heart Month? Did you also know that heart disease is the number one killer in men and women in the U.S.? A few weeks ago, I was asked to team up with the Hope Heart Institute here in Seattle to raise awareness on the topic for the entire month of February. So, we did what any good organization would do when trying to get some attention. We had a photo shoot!
Along with a handful of other prominent locals here in Seattle, I’ve changed my profile picture on twitter and facebook in support of this cause, and will be tweeting about healthy heart facts and tips throughout the month! But, I thought I’d give you one biggie to get you started.
As women, we experience much different symptoms of a heart attack. While chest pain is still definitely one sign, so is light-headedness, nausea, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath. Personally, I’ve had several women in my life who have experienced shortness of breath and fatigue, attributing it to their busy lives, only to find out later that they’ve been suffering from heart problems. It’s so important to listen to our bodies when they’re telling us something is wrong, and make the time to get to our doctors when we have an onset of these type of chronic physical issues.
If you have a story to tell, tips to share, or want to simply put your own two cents in on this month of healthy happy hearts, please feel free to leave a comment and promote the cause all month long! You can also follow the hashtag #flex4hope to see tweets from everyone participating in this campaign (like Seattle cuties Jason & Molly Mesnick!)
Oh, and can I get a huge shoutout to Olugbenro Photography and Gene Juarez (hair and makeup) for this spicy little headshot? I had so much fun gettin’ dolled up for this great cause! Thanks to Hope Heart for asking me to be a part of spreading the word on healthy hearts this month!
